Abstract: The utilization of cardboard and plastic waste in the construction of insulation panels presents a promising avenue for enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability in buildings. Research indicates that both materials can be effectively combined to create insulation solutions that not only reduce energy consumption but also minimize environmental impact. This study presents both experimental and numerical investigations into the thermal performance of a novel insulating panel, PLASCART, manufactured from recycled cardboard and plastic waste. Experimental measurements of thermal conductivity, thermal resistance, and heat flux were conducted at varying temperatures (15.2?°C to 35.3?°C). Results reveal that PLASCART maintains a stable thermal conductivity between 0.0782 and 0.0801 W/m•K, demonstrating favorable thermal stability compared to conventional insulators like expanded polystyrene (EPS). However, due to its higher intrinsic conductivity and lower porosity, PLASCART exhibits approximately half the thermal resistance of standard materials. Complementary numerical simulations were performed on a reference single-family house using ARCHIWIZARD software to evaluate the panel’s impact on energy performance, comfort levels, and monthly energy balance. The simulations compared PLASCART against EPS and rock wool insulation. While PLASCART showed slightly inferior thermal and comfort performance, it remained within acceptable limits and offered substantial environmental advantages due to its recycled composition. These findings suggest PLASCART as a promising sustainable alternative for thermal insulation, especially in regions with moderate climates or where environmental impact is a priority.
