Application of industrial supplementary cementitious materials in concrete: A Review

Author(s): Deepak Kumar and Md Daniyal

Abstract: The increasing demand for sustainable construction practices has led to the incorporation of industrial supplementary cementitious materials (ISCMs) such as Silica Fume (SF), Metakaolin (MK), Fly Ash (FA), and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) in concrete production. These supplementary cementitious materials not only reduce the environmental impact of cement manufacturing but also enhance the mechanical and durability properties of concrete. This paper investigates the influence of SF, MK, FA, and GGBS on key mechanical properties of concrete, including compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength. SF and MK, due to their high pozzolanic reactivity and fine particle size, significantly improve early-age strength and refine the microstructure. In contrast, FA and GGBS contribute to long-term strength development and enhance durability through improved workability and reduced permeability. A comparative analysis reveals that each ISCM offers unique benefits depending on the desired performance characteristics and application. The study concludes that the judicious selection and optimal proportioning of these materials can lead to high-performance concrete with improved strength and sustainability. This review provides valuable insights for engineers and researchers aiming to develop eco-friendly and durable concrete mixes using industrial by-products.
