Abstract: Optimizing road alignment design requires accurate terrain modeling, efficient design iterations, and precise calculation of earthwork volumes to reduce construction costs and environmental impacts. The integration of Global Navigation Satellite System Real-Time Kinematic (GNSS RTK) surveying with intelligent design software like AutoCAD Civil 3D offers an advanced solution that improves both accuracy and design efficiency. This study demonstrates the application of GNSS RTK data integrated directly into AutoCAD Civil 3D for horizontal and vertical road alignment optimization for a 10 km highway bypass near Kolkata, India. GNSS RTK data was processed and seamlessly imported into Civil 3D to create surface models, design horizontal alignments, optimize vertical profiles, and balance earthwork volumes. The results show that this integrated workflow reduces survey-to-design timelines by more than 50%, minimizes costly rework, ensures better cut-fill balancing, and enhances design precision. The findings emphasize that GNSS RTK-Civil 3D integration is a powerful tool for highway and transportation engineering applications.
