Abstract: This study explores the flexural strength of rattan cane reinforced laterized concrete beams (RCLCBs) compared to steel reinforced concrete beams (SRCBs) under low displacement and load conditions. Experimental investigations involved beam specimens with varying rattan cane reinforcement (singly and doubly reinforced) and laterized concrete mix proportions (1:2:4) with water-cement ratios of 0.5 and 0.6. A three-point bending test was conducted, monitoring load-displacement response, flexural strength, deflection, and cracking behavior. Results revealed that RCLCBs did not exhibit comparable flexural strength to SRCBs under these conditions. However, the cracking patterns and failure modes were similar. The study also assessed the environmental impact and cost-effectiveness of using rattan cane, highlighting its potential as a sustainable alternative to steel reinforcement in low to medium load-bearing applications.
