To analysis of construction site inspection & progress with drone technology: An alternative to human examiners

Author(s): Swapnali Satish Shetake and GN Chavan-Patil

Abstract: The construction industry continually seeks innovative solutions to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve accuracy in project execution. This study investigates the use of drone technology as an alternative to traditional human examiners for construction site inspection and progress tracking. By integrating drones with project management software like MS Project, significant time and cost savings can be achieved. A case study comparison revealed that while traditional auto-level methods required 79 days and a cost of Rs. 4,97,280.00 to complete a site survey, drone technology accomplished the same task in just 34 days at a reduced cost of Rs. 2,20,800.00. This demonstrates that drones not only halve the survey time but also substantially lower expenses, proving to be a more efficient and cost-effective solution. The findings suggest that the adoption of drone technology can streamline project timelines and improve data accuracy, leading to better project management outcomes. Future research should explore the integration of drones with advanced data analytics and machine learning to automate complex inspection tasks and expand its applicability across various construction scenarios.
