Fractal geometry and its application in Maharashtra’s Hindu temple architecture: A mathematical and cultural study

Author(s): Patil Shraddha Pankaj and Dharmendra Saxena

Abstract: This researchrnexplores the presence and significance of fractal geometry in Hindu templernarchitecture in Maharashtra, demonstrating its mathematical foundation andrncultural relevance. Hindu temples inherently exhibit self-similarity,rnhierarchical scaling, and recursive symmetry, making them prime examples ofrnfractal-based architectural design. By analyzing case studies such as KailasarnTemple, Trimbakeshwar Temple, and Bhuleshwar Temple, the study highlightsrnfractal patterns embedded within temple layouts, spire formations (shikharas),rnand intricate carvings**. To validate thesernfractal characteristics, computational techniques such as Python-based fractalrnsimulations, image processing algorithms, and fractal dimension calculationsrnare employed. These approaches quantify recursive structures in temple designs, rnreinforcing their alignment with mathematical order. Additionally, arncomparative analysis with Western architectural traditions reveals uniquernapplications of fractal principles, emphasizing the symbolic, philosophical, rnand cosmological significance of Hindu temple architecture. Beyond theoreticalrnexploration, this study examines practical applications of fractal geometry inrnarchitectural restoration, digital modeling, and structural optimization.rnComputational modeling aids in heritage conservation and provides insights forrnmodern architectural methodologies. By bridging engineering precision, rnmathematical frameworks, and cultural interpretations, this study establishes arnmultidisciplinary perspective on fractal geometry, highlighting its enduringrnrelevance in both historical and contemporary architectural design.
